    PH has more billionaires than Thailand, Malaysia




    MANILA, Philippines - Do you know how many billionaires are there in the world, including the Philippines?
    The inaugural Wealth-X and UBS Billionaires Census 2013 revealed there are 2,170 billionaires worldwide with a combined net worth of $6.5 trillion. Their current total wealth has more than doubled from $3.1 trillion during the 2009 financial crisis, and is bigger than the GDP of every country except China and US.
    The report, which looked at the global billionaire population from July 2012 to June 2013, showed Europe is still home to the most billionaires with 766, but North America has the most wealth with $2.15 trillion.
    The average net worth of the world's billionaires is $3 billion.
    Asia is where the most number of new billionaires are based. Since July 2012, 18 new billionaires were created in Asia with a total wealth of $136 billion.
    Billionare wealth surged 13% in Asia to $1.18 trillion this year from $1.05 trillion a year ago. The Wealth X and UBS Billionaires Census study showed that at current growth rates, Asia will catch up with North America in 5 years.
    Among Asian countries, China had the most number of billionaires at 157 with a total net worth of $384 billion, followed by India with 103 billionaires with $180 billion.
    In third place in Asia was Hong Kong with 75 billionaires with a combined net worth of $224 billion. Fourth was Japan with 33 billionaires with $77 billion and fifth was Singapore with 27 billionaires worth $64 billion.
    Sixth was Taiwan with 25 billionaires ($50 billion), followed by Indonesia with 23 billionaires ($47 billion) and South Korea with 23 billionaires ($48 billion).
    The Philippines ranked 9th in Asia, with 13 billionaires with a combined net worth of $35 billion.
    In 10th place was Malaysia with 10 billionaires worth a combined $37 billion, while Thailand ranked 11th with 10 billionaires worth $25 billion.
    The report did not give the names of the billionaires.
    Last August, Forbes magazine released the list of 50 richest Filipinos, which was topped by SM group founder Henry Sy, with a net worth of $12 billion.
    Other billionaires on Forbes' list include Lucio Tan, Megaworld's Andrew Tan, ports tycoon Enrique Razon, John Gokongwei Jr., Jaime Zobel de Ayala and the Aboitiz family.
