Incorporated in 1919, Manila Electric Company (MER) is engaged in the distribution andsale of electric energy through its distribution network facilities in its franchise area. Itsmarket is categorized into four sectors such as residential, commercial, industrial, andstreetlights. The principal sources of power of MER include the National Power Corporation,First Gas Power Corp. and FGP Corporation, Quezon Power (Phils.) Ltd., WholesaleElectricity Spot Market, AES Corporation (Masinloc), Therma Luzon, Inc. (Pagbilao), SouthPremier Power Corporation (Ilijan), AP Renewables, Inc. (Makban), San Miguel EnergyCorp. (Sual), SEM-Calaca Power Corporation (Calaca), Philippine Power and DevelopmentCompany, and Montalban Methane Power Corporation.The franchise area of MER over specified areas in Luzon is approximately 9,337 squarekilometers, covering 34 cities and 77 municipalities. This includes Metro Manila in theNational Capital Region, industrial estates and suburban and urban areas of the adjacentprovinces. On October 20, 2008, the Energy Regulatory Commission granted MER aconsolidated Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the operation of electricservice within its franchise coverage, effective until June 28, 2028, to coincide with itscongressional franchise.MER's subsidiaries are Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corporation, CorporateInformation Solutions, Inc., Meralco Energy, Inc., e-Meralco Ventures, Inc., MeralcoFinancial Services Corporation, Clark Electric Distribution Corporation, Republic Surety andInsurance Company, Lighthouse Overseas Insurance Company, Limited, MeralcoPowerGen Corporation, Inc., and Rockwell Land Corporation.
